Now known as the Alamance County Historical Museum, the Holt family house is where Ruth stays during her visit to Glencoe over the holiday. It is the home of the Holts, the family behind the mill she steals a peek into. The home was built by Michael Holt III in 1790, enlarged in 1800, and expanded again in 1875 by his grandson L. Banks Holt. It was also the birthplace of Edwin Michael Holt, a pioneer of the Southern textile industry. Today, the house is preserved as the Alamance County Historical Museum, a National Register Historic Site. It is furnished largely with original pieces and offers free guided tours that let visitors step into the same rooms Ruth would have found hospitable during her stay. Pieces of original Alamance plaid can still be seen in the museum.
